Norskprøve: Oral & Written Skills

Are you taking the Norskprøve (A2-B1) and want to feel more confident in your speaking and writing skills?
Norskprøven is a series of exams designed for foreign residents who need to demonstrate adequate knowledge of Norwegian, for permanent residence, citizenship, career development, or personal achievement.
This course is for you if you already know some Norwegian but want to focus on typical tasks, topics, and strategies from the spoken and written parts of the exam. The goal is for you to feel better prepared, more self-assured, and to express yourself more clearly in Norwegian.
Join us and build the confidence and competence needed to succeed!
Get targeted training in speaking and writing skills. This course can be taken on its own or as a supplement to our standard norskprøve course.
Starting from 6907 NOKUnlike our standard preparation course, which covers all basic skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), this course gives you extra practice and in-depth training in the oral and written parts of the exam. It’s a great fit for you at an A2-B1 level who wants extra practice in these skills, or as a supplement to our regular preparation course. For this reason, we recommend that you have completed a regular Norwegian course at level A1-A2 to be able to participate in this specialized course.
Are you planning on taking the oral portion of the Norskprøve and wondering why this course includes both speaking and writing?
Get the answer to this and other common questions here.
Why do we work with writing in addition to speaking?
Many students feel they only need to practice one skill—often speaking.
- However, experience and research show that speaking and writing support each other.
- When you learn new grammar and vocabulary, you remember it better when you encounter the topics multiple times and in different contexts.
- What you write can help you speak more clearly, and what you say out loud makes it easier to write good sentences.
On the Norskprøve, the spoken and written sections share many of the same topics and task types, so training for both gives you better preparation for the exam as a whole.
What kind of grammar do we learn in the course?
We will review and practice fundamental grammar that is important for the Norskprøven:
- Word order (the V2 rule and dependent clauses)
- Verb tenses (present, past, perfect, future)
- Nouns (gender and definiteness)
- Agreement of adjectives
- Conjunctions (for, fordi, derfor, men, selv om)
The selection is based on both the school’s experience with what our students need most, and on second-language acquisition research that shows which areas are often challenging for learners.
What pronunciation topics do we work on?
We focus on vowels and consonants that many learners find difficult:
- Vowel pairs such as i/y, o/u, e/ø
- Consonant sounds like the “kj” sound and the “sj” sound
The selection is based on both our experience with previous course participants and research in Norwegian as a second language, which points to these as typical challenges.
Do we learn strategies to tackle challenges on the Norskprøven?
Yes. In the course, we work with various coping strategies that make it easier to handle unexpected situations, both orally and in writing. Among other things, you will practice how to:
- Describe a word you can’t remember by using synonyms or simple explanations
- Use strategies to overcome writer’s block
- Correct yourself in a natural way
- Ask for clarification in a conversation
How do I get feedback?
You will receive verbal guidance during class.
After the test simulations, you will get written feedback on your strengths and what you can continue to work on.
What topics do we work on?
We start with everyday topics such as work, school, and leisure.
Later, we also work on more relevant social topics such as climate and the environment, media and technology, human rights, and multicultural Norway.
