Taking action with the Viking Challenge
By the end of the course, you’ll have the confidence to handle many everyday situations in Norwegian.

More than a beginner course
The Viking Challenge is a focused five-week start, but it is also part of a larger learning path at Alfaskolen.
Alfaskolen is an established language school in Oslo, teaching Norwegian to individuals and companies for many years.
You follow a clear beginner course with regular lessons, repetition and practical classroom activities.
After A1, you can continue with further Norwegian levels, conversation training and Norskprøven preparation.
Frequently asked questions
Is this Norwegian course suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. The Viking Challenge is designes for complete beginners with little or no previous knowledge of Norgwegian. You do not need any previous experience to join. The course gives you a practical and motivating start with Norwegian.
Can I really start speaking Norwegian in 5 weeks?
Yes. You will not become fluent in five weeks, but you can start using Norwegian from the first lessons. By the end of the course, you should feel more confident introducing yourself, asking simple questions and handling many everyday situations in Norwegian.
Is this an A1 Norwegian course?
Yes. The Viking Challenge introduces the foundations of Norwegian and prepares you to continue with next levels. You will work with useful beginner A1 Norwegian, basic vocabulary, simple sentence structure, everyday phrases and basic communication.
When are Viking Challenge lessons?
Classes are held in the evenings from 18:00 to 20:15, every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. The Viking Challenge lessons take place at Alfaskolen in central Oslo. This makes the course easy to attend after work or studies.
Why three evenings per week?
Three evenings per week gives you enough frequency to build momentum, while still leaving space for work, studies and personal life. You practise Norwegian several times a week, which helps you remember more, speak more often and stay motivated throughout the course.
Can I join if I work full-time?
Yes. The Viking Challenge is designed for busy adults who work or study during the day. Lessons take place in the evening, so you can build Norwegian into your weekly routine without taking time off work.
Is this course suitable for international professionals, expats and international students?
Yes. The Viking Challenge is designed for all international residents, expats and newcomers who want to integrate faster into Norwegian society. Many of our students are professionals working in Norway who need Norwegian for everyday communication and career development.
Is homework included?
Yes. You will receive exercises and practical tasks between lessons, so you can review vocabulary, practise grammar and prepare for the next class. Homework helps you get more out of the five-week course.
How many students are in each class?
Each group has a maximum of 16 students. This keeps the class small enough for active participation, speaking practice and individual feedback from the teacher.
What teaching method does Alfaskolen use?
Our teaching combines communication, practical exercises, grammar, listening, reading and speaking. In the Viking Challenge, you will work with useful everyday language and practise using Norwegian actively in class. We aim for interactive, captivating and engaging learning. Grammar is introduced naturally and always connected to real communication, so you’ll understand how to use it in everyday situations.
Why choose classroom learning instead of an app?
Apps can help you memorise words, but classroom learning gives you something apps cannot: real conversation practice, immediate feedback, structure and support from an experienced teacher. For many beginners, this makes it easier to stay motivated and start speaking Norwegian in real situations.
Can I continue after the Viking Challenge?
Yes. After completing the Viking Challenge, you can continue to the next level at Alfaskolen and gradually work towards A2, B1, B2, C1 and eventually Norskprøven preparation.
Will this course help me prepare for the Norskprøven?
The Viking Challenge is not a Norskprøven preparation course, but it gives you an important beginner foundation. If your long-term goal is the Norskprøven, this course can be your first step before continuing to A2, B1 and dedicated Norskprøven preparation.
Why learn Norwegian if many people in Norway speak English?
Many people in Norway speak excellent English, but Norwegian helps you understand more of everyday life, build stronger relationships and participate more fully at work, in studies and in society. Even basic Norwegian can make daily situations feel easier, more personal and less dependent on others switching to English.
How long does it take to become fluent in Norwegian?
Fluency takes time and depends on how often you study, practise and use Norwegian outside the classroom. The Viking Challenge is not designed to make you fluent in five weeks, but to give you a strong foundation and practical first step towards using Norwegian with more confidence.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. Students who complete at least 80% of the course receive a digital certificate of participation.
