Free Norwegian courses for Skilled Workers

Supported by IMDi – Taught by Alfaskolen

This free Norwegian course offers 80 hours of language training tailored to skilled workers who want to strengthen their communication skills in both everyday and professional settings. The training is designed specifically for those working in the following industries:
healthcare, sales and service, education, and tailoring and textile.

In collaboration with the Norwegian Directorate for Integration and Diversity (IMDi), Alfaskolen can offer a limited number of students 80 hours of free Norwegian language training for level B1.

Starting from june

Course rounds

This is the summer round of the course, running in two rounds:

  • Round 1: June 23 – July 17, 2025
  • Round 2: July 21 – August 14, 2025

Each round lasts for four weeks, with classes held Monday through Thursday.

There will also be a final course round in the autumn – more information will be posted later.

Course description

The course consists of 80 lesson hours and is divided into two main parts:

  • Part 1: General Norwegian Training at level B1 (48 hours)
  • Part 2: Industry-Specific Conversation Course (32 hours)

These two parts run in parallel over four intensive weeks, with classes held in person at Alfaskolen.


Part 1: General Norwegian Training at level B1 (48 hours)

This B1-level course provides participants with structured and flexible language training, either as a solid introduction to the level (B1.1 + B1.2) or as a targeted review (B1.3 + B1.4) — depending on your starting point. The course focuses on key skills in reading, listening, writing, speaking, and digital competencies.

Part 2: Industry-Specific Conversation Course (32 hours)

In parallel with your general language training, you will join a conversation course tailored to your profession. You will choose one of the following focus areas:

These lessons will help you use Norwegian confidently in real work-related situations, whether you interact with clients, patients, students, or team members.

Course Format and Schedule

All courses are held at Alfaskolen (Kongens gate 15, Oslo) and run Monday through Thursday.
You can choose between morning or afternoon classes:

Morning Schedule

  • B1 course: 09:00–11:15
  • Break: 11:15–11:30
  • Industry-specific conversation course: 11:30–13:00

Afternoon Schedule

  • B1 course: 12:15–14:30
  • Break: 14:30–14:45
  • Industry-specific conversation course: 14:45–16:15

Course materials

All participants are required to purchase the textbook and workbook for Stein på stein (NOK 1088). Digital resources are not included in the summer course round.

Who is qualified?

This offer has limited capacity. Because of this, there are certain requirements you must meet in order to be eligible: 

  • You have completed level A2 and pass the placement test (all students will need to take a placement test)
  • You are living in Norway and want to improve your Norwegian.
  • You are not currently participating in free Norwegian training sponsored by the Norwegian government (Introduction program, etc.).

NB! You cannot participate in several free courses on behalf of IMDi with other private providers at the same time.

How do I apply?

  1. Fill out the qualification form to see if you are eligible for the course.
  2. Wait for an invitation to take a placement test at Alfaskolen or online. – Placement tests are mandatory before starting a free course!
  3. Courses will be offered at daytime and evening, classroom-based (at Kongens gate 15).
